Researcher

Dr. Carlos Eduardo Barra Couri

Dr. Carlos Eduardo Barra Couri is an endocrinologist and researcher at the Ribeirao Preto Medical School of the University of Sao Paulo. He tested whether a one-time immune reset could preserve insulin production in newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. With Julio Cesar Voltarelli he ran the first trials of high-dose immunosuppression followed by autologous nonmyeloablative hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in recent-onset disease. The results were reported in JAMA in 2007 and again in 2009. Of the 23 patients treated, twenty became insulin free, and twelve stayed insulin independent for a mean of 31 months. His research centers on immunointervention and beta-cell preservation in type 1 diabetes, and he remains based at USP in Ribeirao Preto.
