Dr. Christian Schuetz

Dr. Christian Schuetz is a physician-scientist at the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology in New York. He pursues beta-cell replacement and immunoprotection strategies for type 1 diabetes. Before Columbia he directed an islet transplant laboratory in the Division of Transplantation at Massachusetts General Hospital. His work has proposed pairing transplanted islets with a kidney graft for people whose type 1 diabetes has also damaged their kidneys, so that a single procedure addresses both. He has co-authored a review of where beta-cell replacement stands and what still keeps it from wider use. His published research spans surgery, transplantation and biomaterials.
