Dr. David Harlan

Dr. David M. Harlan is the William and Doris Krupp Professor of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester. He has co-directed its Diabetes Center of Excellence since 2010 and directs the Breakthrough T1D Barbara Dewey Cammett Center of Excellence in New England. Before Worcester he was chief of the Diabetes Branch of the NIH intramural research program at NIDDK. He later spent ten years as chief of the diabetes division at UMass Memorial Health, where clinic volume more than tripled. For more than 40 years his research has explored the pathophysiology of diabetes, spanning immune tolerance and transplantation, autoimmune type 1 diabetes, and human beta cell biology. His honors include the 2022 Rachmiel Levine Award from City of Hope, the Peter Forsham Award, and the U.S. Navy Legion of Merit.
