Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Canada (DRIFCan)
The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Canada is a registered charity, more than twenty years in service, that raises money for cure-focused type 1 diabetes research. It sends 90 percent of every dollar raised straight to the laboratory. Almost all of it goes to Dr. James Shapiro and his team at the University of Alberta, the group behind the Edmonton Protocol. That 2000 breakthrough made islet transplantation a global standard of care. The foundation is led by executive director Melanie Hibbard, whose two sons both live with type 1 diabetes, and chaired by Rob Otway. Its remit is type 1 diabetes only.
