Encellin
Encellin is built on cell-encapsulation work from Tejal Desai's laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco, and was co-founded by its chief executive Crystal Nyitray. Its ENCRT platform (encapsulated cell replacement therapy) is an ultrathin film pouch that holds transplanted cells where a surgeon can retrieve them. The pouch shields the cells from the immune system, removing the need for conventional immunosuppression. Its lead candidate, ENCRT-103-hPI, places primary human islets inside the ENC-103-CED device for adults with type 1 diabetes. The first-in-human study is funded by Breakthrough T1D and is not yet recruiting, with enrollment estimated to begin in January 2027. Encellin is not T1D-only: it describes an initial pipeline across endocrine disorders and plans to extend the pouch to stem cell, gene, and enzyme replacement therapies.
