George Harb, PhD
George Harb, PhD, is a beta-cell biologist in San Diego who develops pluripotent stem cell therapies that generate insulin-producing islets to replace those lost in type 1 diabetes. He co-authored the landmark 2019 Nature study that profiled more than 100,000 human cells during in vitro beta-cell differentiation. The study resolved beta cells, poly-hormonal cells, and a previously unreported enterochromaffin-like population. He led cell therapy research and development at Semma Therapeutics, the company founded to develop stem cell derived islet replacement. After Vertex Pharmaceuticals acquired Semma, he stayed on as a senior director. He later became vice president of regenerative biology at Cellino Biotech, an induced pluripotent stem cell platform company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has also served as a scientific advisor to Tolerance Bio.
