Researcher

Dr. Jean Claude Njabou Katte, MD/PhD

Dr. Jean Claude Njabou Katte is a Cameroonian-trained medical doctor and public health physician based in Yaounde. He studies the pathogenesis of young-onset diabetes in African populations. As one of the first NIHR Exeter Biomedical Research Centre Translational Fellows, he examines islet immune markers of type 1 diabetes, malnutrition markers, monogenic diabetes variants, and genetic risk scores. During his PhD he assembled one of the first comprehensive datasets of its kind: more than 1,000 individuals clinically diagnosed with type 1 diabetes across four African countries. That work, the Young-Onset Diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa study, identified a non-autoimmune, insulin-deficient diabetes subtype reported in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology in 2025. He is a member of the Cameroon Academy of Young Scientists and the NIHR Academy.
