Joslin Diabetes Center
Joslin Diabetes Center traces to 1893, when its founder Dr. Elliott P. Joslin first turned his attention to diabetes care. It is now affiliated with Harvard Medical School and part of Beth Israel Lahey Health. It is one of only 18 NIH-designated Diabetes Research Centers, a designation it has held for more than three decades. Its signature type 1 work is the Medalist Program, which has awarded more than 5,000 medals to people who have lived fifty years with the disease. From it grew the Medalist Study, started by Dr. George King and Hillary Keenan. About a third of the study's participants show no significant eye, kidney, or nerve disease after half a century of high blood glucose, and Joslin is mining their biology for protective factors. It is not type 1 exclusive, also treating type 2 diabetes and complications through units such as the Beetham Eye Institute.
