Maria Cristina Nostro, PhD

Maria Cristina Nostro, PhD, is a senior scientist at the McEwen Stem Cell Institute at UHN and an associate professor of physiology at the University of Toronto. She holds the Harry Rosen Chair in Diabetes and Regenerative Medicine Research. Her laboratory uses directed differentiation of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells to generate transplantable insulin-producing beta cells and surrogate islets for type 1 diabetes. In 2020 her team received a CIHR-JDRF partnership grant under the 100 Years of Insulin initiative. That work advances universal-donor, rejection-resistant stem cell derived islets that could reduce or remove the need for immunosuppression after transplant. She later received the Till and McCulloch Award, which recognizes an outstanding published contribution to stem cell research.
