Dr. Marília de Brito Gomes
Dr. Marília de Brito Gomes is an endocrinologist and professor in the Diabetes Unit of the Department of Internal Medicine at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. She leads the Brazilian Type 1 Diabetes Study Group (BrazDiab1SG), the first nationwide multicenter study of type 1 diabetes across all of Brazil's geographic regions. Its first wave enrolled 3,591 individuals from medical records across 28 public clinics. A second wave evaluated 1,760 individuals with laboratory and genetic testing performed at her university. The study characterized glycemic control, chronic complications, care disparities, and the influence of genomic ancestry among Brazilian patients. Her work has documented that many Brazilians with type 1 diabetes fall short of their glycemic targets and face unequal access to care.
