Researcher

Dr. Matthias von Herrath

Dr. Matthias von Herrath is a professor at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in La Jolla, California. He founded its Center for Type 1 Diabetes Research and runs a laboratory studying the autoimmune destruction of beta cells. He also serves as vice president and senior medical officer in Novo Nordisk's Global Chief Medical Office. He took up that dual role in 2011, agreeing to head the company's immune-intervention initiative for type 1 diabetes while keeping his academic work. Preclinical findings from his laboratory underpinned a combination therapy pairing an anti-IL-21 antibody with liraglutide. Novo Nordisk tested that combination in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 trial in adults with recent-onset type 1 diabetes, reported in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology in 2021. He joined the Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes in 2008.
