Otsuka Pharmaceutical
Otsuka Pharmaceutical was established in 1964 and sells pharmaceuticals alongside functional beverages and foods. Its type 1 diabetes program is OPF-310, encapsulated porcine islets for xenotransplantation, sponsored by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory. The aim is to supply insulin-producing tissue without a human donor. OPF-310 entered a Phase 1/2a trial in 2025 and is recruiting a small group of participants at a single site, the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago. Otsuka is a large diversified pharmaceutical company rather than a diabetes specialist, and OPF-310 is one early-stage program inside it.
