Dr. Per-Ola Carlsson, MD/PhD
Dr. Per-Ola Carlsson is the lead author of a first-in-human study of Sana's hypoimmune, gene-edited allogeneic islets, known as UP421. The islets were transplanted intramuscularly into a person with long-standing type 1 diabetes, without immunosuppression. The study has completed its primary safety end point, treatment-related adverse events within a year of the transplant, and the graft is still surviving and functioning past that mark. PET and MRI imaging showed sustained graft viability at the one-year point. At the latest evaluation, glycated hemoglobin, glucose management indicator, and C-peptide had recovered to the levels seen at six months, confirming stable allograft function beyond a year. No cellular or humoral immune response against the hypoimmune cells has been detected, indicating immune protection through the whole of the follow-up.
