Dr. Peter Girman, MD/PhD
Dr. Peter Girman is director of the Department of Diabetes and deputy director of the Diabetes Centre at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Prague. He leads the pancreatic islet transplantation program he helped initiate in 2005. Working with Frantisek Saudek, he analyzed nearly three decades of the institute's pancreas and islet transplant outcomes, covering 390 simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplants and 44 islet transplantations. Preserved islet function was documented in 60 percent of the islet recipients at one year. His translational work concentrates on improving islet isolation and transplant results for people with type 1 diabetes, especially those with brittle disease and hypoglycemia unawareness. He runs the center's clinical islet laboratory that isolates human islets for these transplants.
