Dr. Peter Stock, MD/PhD

Dr. Peter Stock is professor of surgery at UCSF and co-director of its pancreatic islet transplantation program, having joined the faculty in 1992 after transplant fellowship training. He also serves as vice chair for professionalism, surgical director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program, and director of UCSF's T32 training program in transplant surgery. His research studies mechanisms of transplant rejection between genetically non-identical donors and recipients, chimerism using donor bone marrow, and islet transplantation that can free people with type 1 diabetes from insulin therapy. He is principal investigator on a UCSF trial co-transplanting pancreatic islets and parathyroid gland into an intramuscular site, an approach meant to preserve islet grafts and reverse diabetes. He served as president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
