Reprogenix
Reprogenix is a stem cell and regenerative medicine company commercializing islets grown from chemically induced pluripotent stem cells, a reprogramming route that uses small molecules instead of gene transfer. The approach was tested in a first-in-human study reported in Cell in 2024. A patient with type 1 diabetes became insulin independent 75 days after transplant and stayed that way. Time in the target glucose range rose from under half the day to nearly all of it, and every study endpoint was met at one year. The company says it is led by Lieming Ding and by Professor Hongkui Deng, director of the Peking University Stem Cell Research Center, whose laboratory developed the chemical reprogramming method. Islet replacement is its flagship application rather than its only one, since it presents itself as a broader platform for translating stem cell therapies into the clinic.
