Dr. Shinichi Matsumoto

Dr. Shinichi Matsumoto is a Kobe based clinician-scientist in islet transplantation and islet xenotransplantation. He is visiting professor at Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine and president of the Medical Porcine Development Organization. At Kyoto University Hospital in 2005 he was first author on the report of the world's first successful living donor islet transplantation. That transplant achieved insulin independence in an unstable type 1 diabetic patient from a single donor. He later led clinical islet xenotransplantation using encapsulated neonatal porcine islets given without immunosuppression. He reported in 2016 that half of the patients in the higher dose group held their glycated hemoglobin below target for more than 600 days, with fewer unaware hypoglycemic events. These programs target the donor shortage that limits treatment for type 1 diabetes by developing porcine islets as an alternative islet source.
