Dr. Steven Wisel

Dr. Steven A. Wisel is an abdominal transplant surgeon and assistant professor in the Jim and Eleanor Randall Department of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He has served as surgical director of pancreas transplant there since 2022 and directs living donor kidney transplant. He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed general surgery residency and an abdominal transplant surgery fellowship at UCSF before joining Cedars-Sinai. His scholarship compares islet transplantation against solid organ pancreas transplantation as routes to beta cell replacement in type 1 diabetes, examining outcomes and immunosuppression strategy. Through pancreas and islet transplant surgery he works to restore insulin independence for people with the disease.
