The BETTER Project
The BETTER project is a Canadian type 1 diabetes initiative run from the Institut de Recherches Cliniques de Montréal by researchers, clinicians, and patient partners who live with the disease. It was co-founded and is co-directed by Dr. Rémi Rabasa-Lhoret, an endocrinologist whose research centers on reducing hypoglycemia. Its core is the BETTER registry, which has been recruiting since 2019 and had signed up more than 4,300 people with type 1 diabetes or LADA across Canada by late 2025. Around the registry it has built Support, a bilingual online self-training platform, and a biobank called CREATE-1. The project is exclusively about type 1 diabetes, and its particular question is how often people go low, why, and what reduces it.
