Researcher

Dr. Torbjörn Lundgren, MD/PhD

Dr. Torbjörn Lundgren is a transplant surgeon in the Division of Transplantation Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital and at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. He serves as clinical coordinator of the Nordic Network for Clinical Islet Transplantation. The network ships pancreata from centers in Helsinki, Oslo, Malmö, Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Uppsala to a shared isolation laboratory in Uppsala. The isolated islets treat type 1 diabetes patients who suffer severe hypoglycemia unawareness. He co-authored the network's early islet-after-kidney report covering its first 44 transplantations. He has published on optimizing islet engraftment and on countering the instant blood mediated inflammatory reaction that destroys islets in the portal vein. His clinical trials include work testing autologous regulatory T cells and cibinetide to protect intraportally transplanted islets.
