Wayne Hawthorne, PhD

Wayne Hawthorne, PhD, is a professor of transplantation at the University of Sydney. He was appointed laboratory director of Australia's first clinical islet transplant program in 2001. His Westmead Hospital team was the first in the country to perform allo and auto islet isolation and transplantation and combined islet-kidney transplants. A founding researcher of the Centre for Transplant and Renal Research, he leads a xenotransplantation program developing genetically modified neonatal pig islets as an unlimited source of insulin-producing tissue. A 2022 study from that program showed the islets cured diabetes in preclinical models. He was voted president of the International Xenotransplantation Association and chaired the scientific organizing committees for congresses in San Diego and Geneva. His awards include the inaugural McKenzie Fellowship and the European Union XENOME Award, and he has more than 250 journal publications.
