Dr. Andrew Posselt, MD/PhD
Dr. Andrew Posselt is a bariatric and transplant surgeon at UCSF and co-director of its Pancreatic Islet Transplantation Program. He earned his MD and a PhD in immunology at the University of Pennsylvania and has been on staff at UCSF since 2003. He is principal investigator of a Phase 1 trial, begun in 2016, that places islets in the gastric submucosa rather than the liver to treat type 1 diabetes. He co-authored the 2009 Transplantation report of clinical islet isolation with a GMP-manufactured collagenase and neutral protease, and an account of clinical islet transplantation at UCSF the following year. His research spans islet transplantation, mechanisms of allograft rejection and tolerance, and the metabolic consequences of bariatric surgery.
