Researcher

Dr. James Gardner, MD/PhD

Dr. James M. Gardner is a transplant surgeon-scientist at UCSF, an associate professor in its Division of Transplant Surgery, and an investigator in the UCSF Diabetes Center. He completed his MD, his PhD in genetics, and his abdominal transplant surgery training at UCSF. His laboratory investigates immune tolerance through a population he helped identify called extra-thymic Aire-expressing cells, or eTACs. The lab defines their biology and their potential roles in autoimmune diabetes and maternal-fetal tolerance using transgenic engineering and single-cell multiomics. He established and directs the UCSF VIable Tissue Acquisition Lab, known as the VITAL Core, which supplies fresh human tissue for immunology research. His focus on how self-tolerance breaks down connects directly to halting the autoimmune destruction of islets in type 1 diabetes.
