Bart Roep, PhD

Bart Roep, PhD, is Professor of Diabetology, Immunopathology and Intervention at Leiden University Medical Center and director of its National Diabetes Center of Excellence. He studied medical sciences in Amsterdam and earned his PhD in medicine in Leiden for research on the role of T cells in type 1 diabetes. His work seeks the cause of the disease in humans and translates that knowledge into immune interventions aimed at a cure. The program spans tolerance induction, islet transplantation, and stem cell and gene therapy. He has published more than 350 original articles. His honors include the Minkowski Prize, a VICI award, a Fellowship of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a 2025 ERC Advanced Grant toward a cure. He co-founded the Cure One center at LUMC, which pursues a functional cure that frees patients from anti-rejection medication.
