Research Center

Cure One

Cure One is a type 1 diabetes research center opened inside Leiden University Medical Center in 2025 and inaugurated on World Diabetes Day. It exists because Stichting DON, the Dutch cure-focused diabetes foundation, committed multi-year core funding. It is led by Dr. Eelco de Koning, an internist and endocrinologist who is professor of diabetology at Leiden. Its work is islet and beta cell replacement pursued inside a working clinic rather than a separate laboratory. It builds on a Leiden transplant program that has performed more than 100 islet transplantations since 2007, and the hospital is a participating center in the international FORWARD study of stem-cell-derived islets. The center is exclusively about type 1 diabetes, and its aim is a functional cure that frees people from insulin and from anti-rejection drugs alike.
