Daniel Anderson, PhD
Daniel G. Anderson, PhD, is a biomaterials researcher and a pioneer of cell encapsulation for type 1 diabetes. At MIT in Cambridge he is a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. He also holds appointments in the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. For over a decade his lab has worked to protect transplanted cells from immune rejection without lifelong immunosuppression, a central problem in islet replacement. He co-founded Sigilon Therapeutics, later acquired by Lilly, to commercialize the immune-protective encapsulation technology developed in his lab. His work across medical devices, cell therapy, drug delivery, and gene therapy has produced more than 400 papers, patents, and applications.
