Dr. José Oberholzer

Dr. José Oberholzer is a transplant surgeon and a leading researcher in type 1 diabetes. Based between Zurich and Chicago, he chairs the Department of Surgery and Transplantation at the University Hospital of Zurich and pioneered robotic transplantation early in his career. For over twenty years, his work has centered on cellular therapies for T1D. Beyond research and clinical practice, Oberholzer co-founded Sigilon Therapeutics, which developed immune-protective cell encapsulation, and CellTrans, the company behind Lantidra, the first FDA-approved islet therapy for type 1 diabetes. He is the founder of the Chicago Diabetes Project.
