Edith Mukantwari

Edith Mukantwari is a nutritionist, diabetes educator, and public health advocate in Kampala, Uganda, who co-founded the Africa Diabetes Alliance in 2018 and serves as its executive director. Diagnosed at age 16 in 2005, she was first put on medication for type 2 diabetes and learned only years later that she has type 1. As patient advisor to the Young-Onset Diabetes in Sub-Saharan Africa study known as YODA, she helped guide research that identified a previously unrecognized form of type 1 diabetes in African youth. She was among the first eight Voices for PEN-Plus advocates with the NCDI Poverty Network, promoting the PEN-Plus care model for severe chronic noncommunicable diseases across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. She has also represented people living with type 1 diabetes through the World Health Organization, the NCD Alliance, and the International Diabetes Federation.
