Essam M. Abdelalim, PhD

Essam M. Abdelalim, PhD, is a principal investigator at the Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University under Qatar Foundation in Doha. He leads work on pluripotent stem cell disease modeling. His laboratory develops ways to turn human pluripotent stem cells into insulin producing pancreatic beta cells that could restore insulin production in people with type 1 diabetes. His team also uses patient derived stem cells to model the genetic and molecular causes of diabetes, including monogenic forms, to understand why insulin producing cells fail. He has published extensively on directing stem cell differentiation toward functional islets and on protecting them from stress and immune attack. His work aims to advance cell replacement therapies and to reveal new targets for treating and preventing diabetes.
