Karim E. Shalaby, PhD
Karim E. Shalaby, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow at Sidra Medicine in Doha, Qatar. He works in Essam M. Abdelalim's Laboratory of Pluripotent Stem Cell Disease Modeling on stem cell approaches to diabetes. His research generates insulin producing islets from human pluripotent stem cells and shields them from immune rejection, so they could serve as an off-the-shelf treatment for type 1 diabetes. He co-authored a 2025 review examining whether hypoimmune stem cells and islets represent a genuine breakthrough for diabetes cell therapy. He earned his PhD in biological sciences at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, developing non-viral systems for delivering CRISPR gene editing tools into target cells. That background in immunology and gene editing informs his efforts to make cell replacement therapies safer and more durable.
