Gregory Korbutt, PhD

Gregory Korbutt, PhD, is Scientific Director of the Alberta Cell Therapy Manufacturing Facility and a professor of surgery at the University of Alberta. He is a member of both the Alberta Diabetes Institute and the Alberta Transplant Institute. He was part of the original Edmonton Protocol team that in 2000 established clinical islet transplantation as a treatment for type 1 diabetes. That work built on his methods for isolating and processing human islets. His research group develops neonatal porcine islets as a more accessible source of insulin-producing tissue, pairing them with scaffolds and approaches that avoid toxic antirejection drugs. The manufacturing facility he directs is the only site in Western Canada producing therapeutic-grade cells for use in patients.
