Alberta Diabetes Institute
The Alberta Diabetes Institute opened at the University of Alberta in 2007. It describes itself as Canada's largest stand-alone diabetes research facility, housed in the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Research Innovation. Its type 1 legacy is the Edmonton Protocol, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2000, which lifted one-year islet transplant success from 8 percent to 100 percent. The Edmonton program has since passed its five hundredth islet transplant. Islet transplantation and cell therapy remain its best-known strengths, through researchers including Dr. James Shapiro, Dr. Peter Senior, Gregory Korbutt, and Andrew Pepper. The institute is not type 1 exclusive, with substantial type 2 diabetes research in metabolism, nutrition, and physical activity alongside it.
