Dr. Melena Bellin

Dr. Melena Bellin is a physician-scientist at the University of Minnesota who directs research for islet autotransplantation. She holds joint appointments in the Division of Endocrinology in the Department of Pediatrics and in the Department of Surgery at the Schulze Diabetes Institute. Her research spans chronic pancreatitis, pancreatogenic diabetes, total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation, and alloislet transplantation for type 1 diabetes. She has been primary investigator on two R01-funded islet autotransplantation studies, and she is an investigator in the Chronic Pancreatitis Diabetes Pancreatic Cancer consortium. In a 2021 perspective published in Frontiers in Endocrinology, she was among the co-authors calling for urgent regulatory reform of islet transplantation in the United States. Her published record runs to more than twenty papers in several recent years.
