Dr. Bernhard Hering
Dr. Bernhard Hering is a physician-scientist and professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota who serves as executive director of the Schulze Diabetes Institute and director of islet transplantation. He is internationally recognized for advancing clinical islet transplantation as a cell replacement therapy for type 1 diabetes. He led pivotal trials within the Clinical Islet Transplantation Consortium that helped establish purified human islet products as a treatment for patients with difficult to control diabetes. His research also explores islet xenotransplantation and protocols to induce immune tolerance so that recipients can avoid lifelong immunosuppression. Since the inception of the NIH Collaborative Islet Transplant Registry he has served as its medical director.
