Researcher

Norma Kenyon, PhD

Norma Kenyon, PhD, is the Martin Kleiman Professor of Surgery, Microbiology and Immunology, Biomedical Engineering, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Diabetes Research Institute of the University of Miami. She is also executive director of the Wallace H. Coulter Center for Translational Research. Her team develops ways to transplant insulin-producing islets without lifelong anti-rejection drugs, in clinically relevant models and in clinical studies. That work includes islet and islet plus bone marrow transplantation and the use of stem cells to improve islet engraftment and survival. She demonstrated that costimulatory blockade extends insulin independence and long-term islet survival, work supported by the NIAID, the NIDDK, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, and the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. She has served on the National Advisory Allergy and Infectious Disease Council and the NIH Council of Councils. She has also advised the Food and Drug Administration on islet transplantation and stem cells.
