Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF)
The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. It exists for one stated purpose: to give the institute the money it needs to cure diabetes. It started in 1971 with a small group of South Florida parents whose children had diabetes. Today it runs a national headquarters, a regional development office in New York, and five national and regional boards. It was built around the institute's pioneering islet transplantation program, and it also raises money for the DRI BioHub. The foundation writes its mission around diabetes broadly rather than type 1 alone. The islet transplant and cell replacement research it pays for, though, is aimed at people whose beta cells have been destroyed.
