Dr. Peter Senior, MD/PhD
Dr. Peter Senior is director of the Alberta Diabetes Institute at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He holds the Charles A. Allard Chair in Diabetes Research and is a professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He moved to Edmonton in 2002 to join the Clinical Islet Transplant Program that pioneered the Edmonton Protocol, first published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2000. In 2025 he marked 25 years of that program alongside surgeon James Shapiro. His clinical and research work centers on type 1 diabetes, clinical islet transplantation, and diabetic kidney disease, and he leads a team running trials of new drugs and devices. Before the Edmonton Protocol, only a small fraction of the world's islet transplant recipients stayed insulin independent, a rate the Edmonton team transformed. He earned his MBBS with honors and a PhD from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
