Stichting DON
Stichting DON (Diabetes Onderzoek Nederland) is a Dutch foundation set up in 2006 by Maarten de Gruyter. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of eight, he wanted the field's money moved from care toward a cure. The foundation describes its job as building the bridge from laboratory to patient, and it funds named Dutch groups directly. Its grantees include Eelco de Koning at Leiden University Medical Center, Jaap Jan Zwaginga and Tanja Nikolic, and Aart van Apeldoorn at MERLN in Maastricht. In 2025 it launched Cure One with Leiden University Medical Center, a center built to accelerate a type 1 diabetes cure, and committed multi-year core funding to it. Day to day the foundation is run by director Gwen Rodenburg and chair Peter Frans Pauwels.
