Researcher

Dr. Tobias Deuse

Dr. Tobias Deuse is a physician-scientist and professor of surgery at UCSF, where he directs minimally invasive cardiac surgery and leads the Transplant and Stem Cell Immunobiology Lab. With Sonja Schrepfer he pioneered hypoimmune cell engineering, depleting HLA molecules and overexpressing CD47 so that transplanted cells evade the immune system without immunosuppression. His group's first-in-human work, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed gene-edited islets surviving in a person with type 1 diabetes without immunosuppressive drugs. That proof of concept is central to immunosuppression-free islet replacement. He is a scientific co-founder of Shinobi Therapeutics.
