Thought Leader

Dr. Alexis Carmer

Dr. Alexis Carmer, MD, is a physician, former FDA medical officer, and longtime T1D advocate who curates the Week in Review for The Sugar Science, the digital platform connecting type 1 diabetes researchers worldwide. Her interest in diabetes research and advocacy dates to the time her daughter was diagnosed with T1D, and she brings an unusually layered vantage point to the field as a parent, physician, and regulatory expert. Her clinical career spans academic and community-based anesthesia practice across rural, urban, and international settings, from Los Robles Regional Medical Center to the Royal Free London NHS Foundation. As a Medical Officer and Senior Staff Fellow at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, she handled pre- and post-market reviews of medical devices and combination drug-device products, with a particular focus on automation, machine learning, digital health, innovative clinical trial design, and post-market safety surveillance. A graduate of Wake Forest University School of Medicine, she now works to identify and facilitate the collaborations that speed groundbreaking science into life-changing therapies for people living with T1D.
