The Sugar Science
The Sugar Science is an all-volunteer nonprofit led by Monica Westley, PhD and Dr. Alexis Carmer, MD to bring together the best researchers in type 1 diabetes. It is a digital platform where T1D scientists find updates and information, debate each other in public, and find opportunities to expand or collaborate. It has run two State of the Science series and two data-driven D-Challenges, and hosts private Off the Record brainstorming salons and Ask the Expert pop-up cafes, reaching an audience of about 30,000. Its largest project is the T1D TCR and BCR Repository, funded by an award from the Helmsley Charitable Trust and built with Todd Brusko, the first standardized and harmonized database of T1D T-cell and B-cell receptor sequences, now holding 800 million sequences. Everything it does is specific to type 1 diabetes research.
