Researcher

Andrew Pepper, PhD

Andrew Pepper, PhD, leads a laboratory at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He joined James Shapiro's islet transplant lab at the Alberta Diabetes Institute as a postdoctoral fellow in 2012 and is now an associate professor. His group develops cell-based therapies for type 1 diabetes that bridge stem cell and islet biology with clinical transplantation. It pursues transplant approaches that avoid lifelong immunosuppression and improve beta cell graft function. As first author he reported a prevascularized, subcutaneous, device-less transplant site for islets and cellular grafts in Nature Biotechnology in 2015. That paper has been cited more than 400 times. His honors include a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair and a Breakthrough T1D Career Development Award.
