Dr. James Shapiro, MD/PhD
Dr. James Shapiro is a multi-organ transplant surgeon and islet-transplant researcher at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He led the Clinical Islet Transplant Program team that developed the Edmonton Protocol, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2000. In that study, seven type 1 diabetes patients achieved insulin independence using a steroid-free immunosuppressive regimen with sufficient islet mass. He then served as principal investigator of the international Immune Tolerance Network trial testing the protocol across nine sites. He was also principal investigator and director of the JDRF Clinical Center for Islet Transplantation created at Alberta. He has since advanced cell-replacement work, including a 2022 study transplanting insulin-producing islets grown from patients' own blood, and evaluation of stem-cell-derived islets for type 1 diabetes.
