Dr. Camillo Ricordi
Dr. Camillo Ricordi is Professor of Surgery, Distinguished Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami. He is chief of its Division of Cellular Transplantation, director of the Cell Transplant Center, and director emeritus of the Diabetes Research Institute. He invented the automated method and machine, known as the Ricordi Chamber, that isolates large numbers of islets from the human pancreas; clinical islet transplant laboratories worldwide still use it. He performed the first series of successful clinical islet allotransplants that reversed diabetes, implanting purified donor islets into recipients' livers. He chaired the NIH Clinical Islet Transplantation Consortium for over a decade, and under it the first NIH-funded FDA Phase 3 multicenter islet transplant trial finished in 2017. Since 1993 he has directed the NIH-funded cGMP manufacturing facility at Miami that distributes human tissues and cells for research and clinical use.
