Chicago Diabetes Project

The Chicago Diabetes Project began in 2004. The idea, developed by the Washington Square Health Foundation, was to pull scientists in different countries onto one problem instead of letting them compete over it. Its goal is a functional cure for type 1 diabetes through transplanted insulin-producing islets. Its core clinical method is allogeneic transplantation, in which the islets come from the pancreas of a deceased organ donor. Its founder is Dr. Jose Oberholzer, the transplant surgeon who headed the islet and pancreas transplant program at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 2003. Its executive director is Jill Dine. The project describes a network of researchers around the world but publishes no count of partner institutions.
