Seraxis

Seraxis is a private biotechnology company launched in 2013 by chief executive William Rust and co-founder Carole Welsch. It develops replacement islets grown from a proprietary stem cell line derived from a single human donor pancreas. Its lead product SR-02 is an islet replacement therapy that still requires immunosuppression. SR-03 is the gene-edited, immune-evasive successor meant to remove that requirement, supported in part by a Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund award. The company completed a GMP quality audit of its manufacturing suite in 2024 ahead of an investigational new drug filing for SR-02. That study was withdrawn before enrolling anyone, so no Seraxis product is currently in trials. Its stated target is insulin-requiring diabetes rather than type 1 alone, covering both T1D and insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes.
