CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science
The CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science is a basic research institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was renamed from the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology in 2020. Its type 1 diabetes work sits in the research group of Xin Cheng, which derives endoderm stem cells and grows regenerative islet tissue from them. That tissue, called E-islet, was transplanted into three recipients with type 1 diabetes in a study run with the transplant team at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital. The same platform underpins EndoCell Therapeutics and its product E-islet 01, the first regenerative islet cleared for trials by both the Chinese and the United States drug regulators. Molecular and cell biology is the wider remit here, and the islet program is one line of work inside it.
