Breakthrough T1D

Breakthrough T1D was founded in 1970 as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation by Lee Ducat, Carol Lurie, Erwin Lurie, and a group of parents whose children had type 1 diabetes. It took its current name in 2024. It funds research toward curing, preventing, and treating T1D and its complications. Its advocacy sustains the federal Special Diabetes Program, which had dedicated more than 3.5 billion dollars to T1D research as of 2024. Among the therapies it backed is Tzield, the first FDA-approved disease-modifying treatment for type 1 diabetes, which delays clinical onset by two years or more. It is led by chief executive Aaron Kowalski, the first person with T1D to hold the job. It works through five international affiliates in Australia, Canada, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
